I remember being a young pet lover, communicating with my own dogs and simply thinking everyone did this. As an adult, that connection became invaluable through my years of grooming and rescuing dogs.
I would sometimes tell clients what their dogs had expressed to me, and the reactions were unforgettable. Some immediately validated what I heard: “Oh yes, we have family visiting, and my two-year-old grandson chases Birzy around the house. I can’t believe you knew that!” Another client looked completely shocked when her dog revealed an argument she and her husband had had about buying a new car.
Experiences like those showed me just how specific, surprising, and deeply meaningful the things our pets choose to share can be.
How it began for Corrina
My first pet died when I was seventeen. That night, he visited me in my dreams. My mom gently told me it was simply my grief being soothed, and at the time, I accepted that.
About a month later, my friend’s horse had to be euthanized, and I went to be with her for support. That night, the horse came to me in a dream, joyful to be free from pain. He wanted me to tell my friend how deeply he appreciated all her love—and especially the apples, because they made him feel extra spicy. Sharing his message brought her so much comfort.
Throughout my twenties, experiences like this happened so often that I finally embraced them. Now, looking back from my late fifties on the friends, family, and word-of-mouth referrals that led me to help pets transition and bring back their messages, I see a calling for which I can only express gratitude.
How it began for Merle
When I was young, my family rescued and adopted the misfit pets—the ones nobody else wanted because they simply weren’t a good fit for most families. As an only child, I spent nearly all my spare time comforting animals who had been abused and listening to the stories they shared with me.
Some had been adopted only to be returned to the shelter. Others had lost a beloved pet parent and then been left on the side of the road by the family. They arrived scared and confused, unsure of what was expected of them in a new environment, and they helped me understand how their behavioral issues had taken shape.
Again and again, their message was simple: tell us what to expect, and let us know we are safe now. This is a gift I have embraced since childhood, and sharing it with others has helped me through my own journey in life.
